yogi b and natchatra
In a place when English R n B, hip hop and rap is omnipresent, I was quite surprised to hear about Tamil rap. And it is good stuff, I tell you.

I heard a piece from the Vallavan cd, unknowingly, and even linked it up on my blog quite some time back. Only recently, I heard one of their rap pieces in the car and was quite surprised at the quality of the music.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't think SEAsian music is capable of hitting the mark. I warmly welcome any form of creative energy from our region and will try and get my hands on a piece, if I can.

I guess after hearing quite a bit of local music, (and that of good friends too:) )I was not expecting this. I was blown away by their lyrics, eloquence and their ability to maintain a high standard of Tamil (in rap too!) and went down to Little India to get their CD.

I love the entire album, it's really really good. I'm so proud that there is such a thing as Tamil rap, and not just some kuching kurap thingy, but good quality music.

Did a bit of research on them, and apparently Yogi B has been in the music industry since 1996. Coming from the group Poetic Ammo ( my m'sian colleague tells me that they used to be big back home ), he finally broke away to do his own thing.

And he sure did. His signature santhanam and pottu, which he proudly wears, along with his baggy clothes, set him apart. Not to mention his cool American accent.

Yogi B, hit us with more!
